The Pearl Islands

A quiet, ocean-first destination.

The Pearl Islands are an archipelago of more than 200 islands and islets in the Gulf of Panama. The waters are known for sport fishing, with more than 200 International Game Fish Association records, and for marine life including dolphins, sea turtles and visiting humpback whales. The archipelago has been growing steadily as a destination for travelers who want beaches, the ocean and seclusion close to the capital.

What could be built

The size and coastline suit a private-island luxury resort, an eco-tourism development, a residential community or a hospitality brand. A master plan prepared earlier for the site, by a developer that is no longer involved, showed what is possible: a development of about 440 hectares with residential lots, a marina village and marina, a beach clubhouse, a boutique hotel, an airstrip and a golf course. That plan is a reference, not a requirement. The rest of the land could stay natural or be developed in later phases.

Any new project would need current environmental approvals and permits.
